Residents of Northeast Minneapolis enjoy a number of exciting annual events, the best known of which is Art-A-Whirl. Locals whole-heartedly embrace this festival, participating in the educational activities, art demonstrations, music and dance. Other annual events in Northeast Minneapolis include Weed It and Reap It neighborhood clean-up days, a Holiday Celebration in December and the Celebrate Northeast Parade. The Northeast Minneapolis Farmer’s Market offers locally grown vegetables, fruits, flowers, plants, and honey along with local beef, chicken and pork. Much of what is for sale at the Farmer’s Market is organically farmed.
Parks in Northeast Minneapolis are little havens of peace and green. Every neighborhood in Northeast Minneapolis has at least one park. Nearly all of the parks feature walking paths, ball fields, courts, picnic areas, playgrounds and pools. Audubon Park has a Recreation Center with year-round activities. Logan Park, Waite Park and Luxton Park have ice rinks that are used for hockey and recreational skating. Columbia Park encompasses 183 acres and includes a golf course. The Jim Lupient Water Park was designed to look like a rock quarry and features foam play quarry equipment and foam logs along with natural rocks. The park has water slides, a tube slide, a log water walk, spray features, water volleyball “courts” and lap swimming lanes. Boom Island on the Mississippi River offers 25 acres of family fun with a boat launch, docks, play areas, promenades and picnic areas. The Anson Northrup is docked there and offers sightseeing cruises. Northeast Minneapolis also contains six miles of the 50-mile Ground Rounds National Scenic Byway. East River Flats Park is located below 25-foot high limestone bluffs along the Mississippi Gorge. This unique park provides an unimproved location from which to experience the mighty Mississippi River in its naturally wild state. Nicollet Island Park, with its promenade view of the first dam built on the Mississippi River, was named for mapmaker Joseph Nicollet. The Nicollet Island Pavilion was originally built in 1893 for the William Brothers Boiler Works. The upper end of the island contains 43 historic homes built from the 1860s to the 1890s. Also nearby is the city’s Lakes Area, a major outdoor recreational destination for thousands of Twin Cities residents. The area is well known for its beautiful Chain of Lakes as well as Lake Harriet and nearby Minnehaha Creek. More than five million visitors come to the Chain of Lakes each year to bike, walk, jog, rollerblade, or cross-country ski around the lakes on 12 miles of paths. Each lake is surrounded by stunning parkland and open space. The Midtown Greenway, a bicycle highway, connects the Chain of Lakes to the Mississippi River. The Greenway is buffered from the urban areas it traverses by preserved open space. The Chain of Lakes is second in the number of annual visits to attractions in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. First is the Mall of America in nearby Bloomington, with more than 40 million visits per year. The mall covers 78 acres and includes shops, restaurants, nightclubs, the LEGO Imagination Center, Cereal Adventure sponsored by General Mills, an indoor simulated speedway and a movie theatre complex. Also inside the mall is Underwater Adventures. This walk-through aquarium is home to more than 3000 sea creatures. Tanks allow visitors to touch sharks and stingrays, and a virtual submarine ride offers a look into the mysterious sea. Two exceptional museums are located on the University of Minnesota’s main campus. The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum houses art from the 20th century. The James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History displays plants, animals, birds and natural objects from Minnesota. Artwork depicting the rugged beauty of the state is also on display. The Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts Complex houses the Children’s Theatre Company, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The Walker Art Center contains works of 20th century and contemporary art from America and Europe. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden has more than 40 sculptures on its 11-acre grounds. A footbridge spans 16 lanes of traffic to connect the garden to Loring Park and downtown. |
